Finalist Tales2inspire annual writers' contestBuilding your own home can be an incredibly satisfying journey. This is particularly so as you see your dreams take shape and become real. This is the story of Leanne and Luke, a couple who followed their dreams.  They moved to a rural district of southern Australia, where they built a new home and new lifestyle. Starting with practically nothing, they were amazed at what they created. All they needed was a good plan, some basic skills and a clear idea of what they really wanted.

This yearning to return to the country grew inside both Luke and his wife Leanne until they were unable to ignore it any longer. So they made the decision to sell their home in the suburbs and move to that part of Budgeree where Leanne grew up.

The inspiring story of how a new life begins

Luke’s family arrived in Budgeree in January to a bare paddock and a shipping container filled with their personal belongings. Their only refuges at the time were their caravan and a rickety and breezy shack. Built in the 1880s as the original district schoolhouse, the shack was pulled down in 1901 and converted into a house. But by mid century, it was turned into a hay shed. When they arrived, this hay shed offered them some protection from the rain, and no protection from the wind and cold. But it did sport two working fireplaces.

When Luke, Leanne and their three children arrived, they were towing the camper van that would be their home for the next four months. Sometimes they were filled with excitement. At other times, they were filled with apprehension of what the next bend in the road would bring. But it was in these extremely remote places that they got to know each other all over again. During those times they found a sense of contentment in living simply. Thoughts of self-sufficiency and to living more in-tune with nature crystallized into ideas for their new home.
