INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK

HOW A GREAT BLUE HERON CHANGED MY LIFE

by Sondra Perry

Winner #Tales2Inspire #Inspiring Story

This inspiring story begins on a beautiful spring morning when Sondra noticed something big moving near the smaller of their two outdoor ponds.

It was a HUGE bird that looked about six feet tall. She ran to get her camera, but returned to the back door just as it was flying away.

More than just a little curious, she grabbed her bird identification book to find out what it was.  A GREAT BLUE HERON! A big, cool bird like that was in their own backyard. She wondered if it would ever come back, but to her delight, it returned within five minutes.

How smart and clever he was!

Before Sondra’s eyes could take in what she was seeing, the bird snatched a fish from their pond and swallowed it! Suddenly she realized why it was there.

For the next week, she tried to shoo him from their yard each time he returned. But he was sly. He’d just wait for her to go back into the house. Even though he was making a serious go at the fish, she was enthralled by his presence. Then her husband made a suggestion. As a distraction from the pond, why not go to the store and buy the bird some fish?

A hungry, clever Great Blue Heron

The inspiring story of a most unusual friendship

Practically every day at dawn Sondra found him waiting in the yard for a piece of fish. She soon started calling him Henry the Heron and they fell into a routine. She’d put the piece of fish on a paper plate and left it on the grass, while Henry stood a fair distance away. As she walked back into the house, he’d swoop in and grab the fish. Just in case he would come back the next day, she was always ready with more pieces of fish in the freezer.

One year turned into two, then three, then twelve. Henry continued to show up long after the ponds no longer held fish.

How a piece of fish becomes an important part of this inspiring story

And that is how Sondra’s friendship with this wild bird began, by the offering up of a piece of fish. You will just have to read her story for yourself to learn how this unusual friendship changed Sondra’s life.
