INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK

WHEN COMPASSION REPLACES FEAR

by Maria Jordan

Winner #Tales2Inspire #Inspiring Story

You are about to read the inspiring story of how a nurse overcame her own fears to help a psychiatric patient.

As a nurse working with the homeless population in Philadelphia, Pa,  Maria Jordan began to interact with a fifty-five year old woman with a heartbreaking history. Although her childhood was rife with physical and mental abuse, she more or less held it together throughout high school.

But upon graduation, Joyce enlisted in the army, where she was assigned to active duty. It was then that she  discovered that her nightmares had just begun. New traumas heightened her psychoses.

How was Maria to approach this woman, so filled with rage and volatility? How could Maria keep her patient from striking out against her? At first Maria wondered how she could build a sense of trust, while both keeping her distance and growing close. Through a novel approach of infusing music and humor into their daily interactions, these two women learned that they had more in common than they even realized.

Several months passed and vocational services approached Maria’s patient. They thought she was ready to enter the work force. Nervous, but excited, this woman went about practicing job interviewing skills. She landed a part time job as a hostess in a small restaurant. Is life now perfect for Maria’s patient? Realistically, life will always be challenging for her. Yet she is far from the angry woman of a year earlier.

Meet Maria and watch her story in the video below.

In her inspiring story, Maria says that she learned much about herself and shares her life inspiring message:

Keep fighting for what you want. And do it fearlessly, with a compassionate heart.
