INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK
THE HEART OF THE HOME IS HOT CHOCOLATE
by Mary Romero
In this inspiring story, Mary shares a warm childhood memory
from a chaotic childhood.
Not every home is filled with joy, even if there is no overt abuse. Author Mary Romero shares some good and not-so-good memories from her childhood. One of her best-of-times memories dates back to the days when her dad took her and her four siblings ice skating. As soon as he’d pour that piping hot liquid treat from a steaming thermos filled with hot chocolate, all seemed right with the world.
But behind the scenes, lots of tension was bubbling up in their home. After listening in on one of her parents’ tumultuous arguments, she summoned her courage and asked her father if they were going to get a divorce. When he looked her in the eye and told her that would never happen, she believed him. She needed to believe him, yet his words turned out to be an empty promise.
After her parents went through a bitter divorce, Mary learned some valuable lessons about love and selfless behaviors. With the support of a loving maternal grandmother, she began to understand the difference between doing something out of love and doing the very same thing with selfish motives. All of these memories bundled together have helped her become a more responsible parent. Whenever her own children come in from the cold, she remembers to make them hot chocolate. She learned from her grandmother that it isn’t the recipe, but the heart that stirs it all together. That is how she has been able to create a warm loving home for her own children.
Anyone for hot chocolate?
