INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK

A BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR MOM

by T.H. Everingham

In this inspiring story, Tom shares a joy filled memory from his childhood.

A Birthday Gift for Mom is an inspiring story that proves that money doesn’t buy love. It is the small gestures of human kindness that really make the difference to a small child.

finalistIt was Pittsburgh, 1938, a year when eight year old Jimmy had a big problem. He needed to find enough money to buy a birthday gift for his mom. But he couldn’t afford much from the twenty-five cent allowance he received each Saturday. He would have to cut out something from his weekly treats. Would it be his regular Saturday ten cent movie at Oakland theater or the White Tower five cent hamburger, glass of chocolate milk or slice of cake? What and how much was he willing to sacrifice?

He made his choice and decided to give up the cake. Because he was used to having chocolate milk with his hamburger, he knew that would be the least difficult sacrifice. Besides, if he sacrificed the cake, he would have a whole nickel to spend on a gift. After all, he was going to buy this present with his own money and a nickel was a lot for an eight year old to have in these times. Yes, he would miss the cake but Mom was worth it.

. . .

Entering the large Oakland Murphy five and dime store, he went directly to the section where he recalled seeing things girls would like.He saw colorful hair ribbons wrapped around holders, plastic combs and hairpins, folded cards of sewing needles, spools of thread and small cards holding matched buttons. So many things to choose from. Then Jimmy suddenly spotted some bars of fragrant white soap. Each bar had pink floral designs with colorful swirls of leaves and vines, which looked very expensive, but surprisingly only cost five cents each. His problem was solved. He knew his Mom was sure to love one of those fragrant bars of soap.

Jimmy couldn’t wait to surprise Mom with his gift, but because the next day was Mom’s birthday, he didn’t have long to wait. After everyone sang ‘happy birthday’ and he handed her his gift, her surprised look made him happy, but what she did next made him even happier.
