THE INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK
THE REMARKABLE TALE OF TWO ELEPHANTS
by Lois W. Stern
Much has been told in the past about elephants’ amazing memory. Once you read the inspiring story of elephants Shirley and Jenny, you will be convinced that it is so. I suspect this is a story you’re not likely to ever forget it.
The two elephants, Shirley and Jenny, first met at the Kelly-Miller Circus when Jenny was merely a baby calf. Their bonding was nearly a “love at first sight” relationship, with Shirley quickly assuming the role of the doting mother to her newborn child.
Sadly, though, the two were separated after their first year together. Both elephants lived apart for the next twenty-two years, each experiencing a life fraught with injuries and abuse. Once Shirley’s injuries became so severe that she could no longer perform, she was sold to a small zoo and eventually taken to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.
Meanwhile, baby Jenny grew up spending her whole life as a circus performer, but was clearly unhappy with her lot. Several times she ran away from her trainers during performances. Finally she was sent away on a breeding loan, but that too was unsuccessful. Her miseries continued until her fragile condition became a cause for public concern.
Finally, Jenny too was taken to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. It was coincidence enough that these two elephants ended up in the same place so many years later, but their reunion was more remarkable yet.
It’s been said that elephants never forget. I believe it is so. I also believe this is one inspiring story you will long remember. And if you are anything like me, as you near its ending you will be holding your breath and whispering “unbelievable”.
