INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK
A PROFILE OF COURAGE
by Tina Chippas
In this inspiring story, you are about to learn the true definition of the word hero.
What is your definition of a hero? We read about them in books, watch them in action on TV and in movies, but rarely are we fortunate enough to come face to face with a true hero. In Tina’s inspiring story, we meet one of them. His name is Father Nicholas.Tina didn’t learn about the heroic acts of her grandfather until forty years after his death. And then, it was quite by by chance.
Father Nicholas was a Greek Orthodox priest who defied the crazed demon, Hitler to save the lives of innocent people who happened to be Jews. In 1941 Hitler authorized Himmler to exterminate the Jews living in Greece. No one knew at first that Father Nicholas was hiding them in his ancient church, which had many secret places. He kept them safe harbored there until they could arrange for their transport out of the country. With that act of courage, he saved the lives of thousands of Jewish countrymen otherwise doomed to certain death.
Alas, the day came when German soldiers marched to the church and led Father Nicholas and all his assistants into the courtyard. They were machine gunned to death, right before their loyal parishioners.
Tina first leaned about her grandfather’s selfless acts of bravery while on tour in Berkentesgaden, German. Standing side by side in a cemetery marked by Nazi swastikas, she and a fellow tourist began to converse. This casual conversation was the catalyst for Tina to seek more truths about her grandfather.
Not only is this spine chilling story a beyond coincidence happening, it is an eye opener to the ways different people respond in a time of crisis. Once you read this inspiring story, you will undoubtedly ask yourself, “What would I do if faced with the situation confronting Father Nicholas?”
