INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK

THE HANUKKAH BUNNY

by Mort Laitner

Winner #Tales2Inspire #Inspiring Story

Mort tells us the inspiring story of a rabbit. After you finish reading it, ask yourself,
who do you think was more inspired, Mort or the bunny?

Mort grew up in the Catskills, where rabbits hopped through his life and were part of the daily scenery. Those white furry mammals always brought smiles to his face, except when he found them munching on vegetables from his garden. In the fall, he’d  watch them scurry across the birches as if they knew hunters were taking aim at their furry-little bodies.

In the spring, they’d scamper around abandoned bungalows, totally fixated on procreation, recreation or both. They played, frolicked and chased each other as only lovers can.

Fast forward thirty years

Mort now lives in the suburbs of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This is a land pretty much devoid of rabbits, except for those seen and purchased in pet shops. And that’s where Mort’s neighbor bought a pair of bunnies for his kids.

inspiring story of a bunny fascinated by the Hanukkah lights

Hanukkah bunny looking for adventure

On the first day of December, 5:30 pm, several rabbits seeking freedom had burrowed under his neighbor’s wooden fence. That same afternoon, Mort’s wife started decorating their home for the holidays. She began by hanging blue and white Star of David Hanukkah lights to their soffits. Next she placed multi-colored lights on a four foot high menorah. Finally, as a finishing touch, she secured a three foo high dreidel to their front lawn. As soon as he plugged in the electrical cords, the lights began to twinkle and the dreidel slowly started to spin.

One of the bunnies sat transfixed, staring at the turning dreidel. As if experiencing a religious awakening, this Hanukkah Bunny spent the next thirty nights on the Laitner lawn in the glow of the dreidel. This biblical bunny returned every night to the same spot as if hypnotized by the blinking, spinning lights.
