Humorous Award Winning Stories by Micki Peluso

Micki dazzles us with her humorous stories. Relatives and Fish is one of them, a story that begins the day Micki’s oldest daughter calls to say that she wants to come home. Her marriage is falling apart, she says, and she needs a few weeks to get her head together.

Mom quickly agrees. Even though she pretends to be sad, she secretly looks forward to having her daughter return to the nest. How wonderful to be able to spend some time with those two adorable grandsons, she thinks with delight.

That is how Micki begins the humorous story, Relatives and Fish, although she ends it quite differently!

Grandson in picture frame

The family arrives that evening with enough paraphernalia to outfit the Boy Scouts.

“Grandma!” cries her three-year-old grandson. “We’re here! Where’s your cookies?”, while his six month old brother coos and grins. Micki loves hearing those words. She begins to feed them, which is her first mistake, as the sugared cereal makes the three-year-old hyperactive, while the 4 percent milk has made the baby’s stomach rebel. Her daughter sits crumpled across two chairs, saying little, but eating enough for three people.

The visit only deteriorates as the week wears on. Micki looks back and laughter after they leave, while recalling what Ben Franklin said about visitors and fish.

In her story The Mean Machine, Micki makes us laugh at her struggles with electrical appliances. Why do all the defective appliances of the world end up in her home? She is convinced she is not to blame.

Her husband bought her the vacuum, sure proof that it must be his fault that it runs in reverse. As for her cake mixer, she’s sure it arrived with its blades already bent out of shape. Why else would it splash batter all over her kitchen counter and floor?

86 the Coleslaw

If you think 86 the Coleslaw refers to the number of coleslaw orders customers place at a restaurant, think again!

Micki’s husband asks her to take charge of his restaurant for the next 24 hours while he is out of town. Although he swears that the place practically runs itself, Micki meets with one disaster after another. Think of the words, Everything that can go wrong, does go wrong, because those are the words that best describe the day Micki ran The Chicken Coup.

Tomatoes and Teenagers

Since we all know how teenagers can turn our lives upside down, Micki gives us some laugh-out-loud moments in her humorous story, Tomatoes and Teenagers. She is here to assure us that, just like tomatoes, teenagers do ripen in time.

Micki smiles to herself as she envisions her teenagers growing up, and hopes that someday they will become parents of teenagers too. Then it will be her turn to sit back and watch them suffer through the ripening of their own children, just as she is suffering right now.
