On the Road in Europe – A Humorous Story by David
“Hitchhiking in Europe in 1974 was the one of the highlights of my life,” says David. Only twenty at the time, he was ready to see the world. He had very little money, but that didn’t matter to David. Hitching doesn’t cost a dime, and comes packed with adventure and sometimes even romance. He hitched from Rome through the south of France to Spain. In Spain, he made a loop to view all the art he had studied in school. He made a side trip to Morocco, which was unwise for an American at that time. After escaping Morocco, he made a beeline back to Florence, Italy to see Michelangelo’s David, which he had missed on a previous attempt. Florence is where most of the best action takes place in his story.
The 70’s were hitchhiking’s Golden Age. From 1970 to 1976, with three different partners, Dave hitched literally thousands of miles. He just totaled it up. Including all of the short U.S. hitches, and the three long U. S. hitches, the two Canadian hitches and the European hitches; it totaled out to more than 27,000 miles. That’s longer than the circumference of our beloved planet Earth.
In 1974, Dave made it to Europe and Morocco. The memoir “Florence Nightingale” relates his hitching experiences from Rome to Spain and Morocco, then sleeping in a cemetery before returning back to Florence.

Lover of Nature – An Inspiring Story by David
Grandmother Helen shared her love of birds with David, who soon caught her passion. Canada Geese, more commonly known as Canadian Geese, were their favorites. David learned not only about their physical characteristics, but their habits and lifestyle as well. He observed their parenting skills, from incubating their freshly laid eggs to protecting their young. Most impressive of all was their lifestyle of mating for life. This fact brought home a life lesson that served David well in a time of need.
David’s story, Canadian Geese is published in Tales2Inspire ~ The Garnet Collection (Stories in Feathers and Fur).
