INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK – RAE THE STRAY by Beth Smithem

INSPIRING STORY OF THE WEEK

RAE THE STRAY

by

Beth Smithem

In her inspiring story, Rae the Stray, author Beth Smithem tells how she and Rae found one another.

One day Beth noticed a small yellow dog hiding in the culvert under her driveway. She kept an eye on it the rest of the day, thinking that if it was still there the next day, she’d call Animal Control.  Tomorrow came and it was still there. With a little coaxing, this little dog eventually came out and made a beeline for her front porch. Beth discovered that it was a female puppy, a predominately yellow Labrador. She quickly made herself at home in Beth’s living room. And that is how another inspiring story begins. So much for calling Animal Control!

She got along with Beth’s cats and her dog Rocky, a recent rescue from Tennessee, so she welcomed her into their family. When Beth took her to the vet’s to get spayed and vaccinated, they asked for her name. Beth thought for a moment. She had just seen a movie called Uptown Girls where the main character was a lonely, loving girl named Rae who pretended to be tough. It reminded Beth of this little puppy, so that’s the name she gave the vet.

Then on one of their daily walks, disaster struck. Rae wriggled out of her collar and met with a devastating accident. She was struck by a car that then sped away. Blood trickled out of her Rae’s nose. Rocky was confused and stood there motionless. Then another car drove up and actually stopped. Although the driver, Sarah, lived only a few houses from Beth, they had never met. She didn’t hesitate to jump out of her car to help. Another car stopped. A man jumped out and together they lifted Rae into the back of Sarah’s SUV. After delivering Rae into the competent hands of my vet, she drove Beth home to get her car.

Rae after surgery

Will Rae survive? Will she ever walk again?
